Minimum Support Price: The central government has brought a good news for the farmers. If we look at the minimum support price and procurement data from other states, the price and quantity are very high in the last 8 years. Giving information, a senior official of the Food Ministry said that more wheat and paddy have been procured for the last eight years.
The number of farmers covered under the MSP has also increased due to the purchase of large quantities of wheat and paddy by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the nodal agency for procurement and distribution of paddy and wheat. Giving information, Additional Food Ministry Officer Subodh Singh said that between the marketing season 2013-14 and 2021-22, the central procurement of wheat and paddy is very high.
Grain being bought from many states
The official informed that now grains are being procured from more states than before. Not only this, the MSP has also increased. Giving information, he said that the scope of procurement of food grains has increased in Himachal Pradesh, Assam and Tripura. He told that FCI has started buying paddy from Rajasthan.
Production of wheat and paddy also increased
The production of wheat and paddy has increased rapidly since the year 2013-14. In the case of wheat, procurement has increased from 250.72 lakh tonnes in the year 2013-14 to 433.44 lakh tonnes in the year 2021-22. The cost of procured wheat has increased from Rs 33,847 crore to Rs 85,604 crore. Singh has informed that as against 20.47 lakh farmers in the year 2016-17, 49.2 lakh farmers who grew wheat in the year 2021-22 have got the benefit.
How much has the MSP increased
The MSP of wheat has been increased to Rs 2,125 per quintal. It is Rs 1,350 in the first year 2013-14, which means it has increased by 57 percent. In the case of paddy, the MSP has increased by about 53 per cent to Rs 2,060 per quintal as compared to Rs 1,345 per quintal in 2013-14.
Paddy procurement has increased from 475.30 lakh tonnes in the year 2013-14 to 857 lakh tonnes in the marketing year 2021-22 (October-September). The MSP Privas paid to paddy farmers during the marketing year 2021-22 has increased from about Rs 64,000 crore earlier to about Rs 1.7 lakh crore.
Where is the grain being bought from?
The official has informed that at present, coarse grains are being procured from nine states, which include Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu. He said that maize, millet, jowar and ragi are being bought on MSP. The procurement of food grains is expected to increase to about 9.5 lakh tonnes in the year 2022-23.
