India Aviation Sector: The country's largest domestic airline Indigo is preparing to expand its footprint across the world. To expand its network and connect the entire world with the country's metro cities, IndiGo has decided to purchase 30 new A350-900 widebody aircraft from France's Airbus. This deal is estimated to be worth 4 to 5 billion dollars. Apart from these 30 aircraft, IndiGo also has purchase rights to buy 70 additional Airbus A350 family aircraft to meet future requirements.
Preparation to connect metro cities with the world
In a regulatory filing, IndiGo said that IndiGo has ordered 30 A350-900 aircraft, which will help IndiGo expand its wings and expand its network. IndiGo will be able to connect the world with different metro cities of the country. The aircraft will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine. Indigo said that the delivery of these aircraft will start from 2027. The fuel tanks of these planes are large and they can fly long distances.
Order book of 1000 aircraft
At present Indigo operates 350 aircraft. Last year, in June 2023, Indigo had created history by ordering 500 aircraft to Airbus in one go. With this, the order book of A320 family aircraft has increased to 1000 aircraft which will be delivered in the next decade. IndiGo's order book includes A320NEO, A321NEO and A321XLR aircraft. On placing the order for 30 A350-900 aircraft, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said, this is a historic moment for IndiGo and it will help shape the future of Indian aviation with the airline.
Widebody plane ordered for the first time
This is the first time that Indigo is going to include widebody planes in its fleet. At present IndiGo operates two B777 widebody aircraft which are taken on lease from Turkish Airlines. Last year, apart from IndiGo, Tata Group's Air India had also ordered 470 aircraft in February 2023. In which 250 aircraft have been ordered to Airbus and 220 aircraft have been ordered to Boeing. Akasa Air has ordered 150 B737 MAX aircraft from Boeing.
India's rapidly growing aviation sector
The number of air passengers in India is showing tremendous growth. Air passenger traffic in the 2023 calendar year has been 153 million (15.3 crore). And the government estimates that by 2030 the number of air passengers in the country will double to 300 million (30 crore). Domestic air passenger traffic is growing at the rate of 15 percent annually while international air passenger traffic is growing at the rate of 6.1 percent. India's domestic aviation market is at third place in the world and international civil aviation market is at seventh place and if both are added, India's aviation market is at fifth place. On one hand, India's civil aviation market is continuously growing. In such a situation, India will need 2840 new aircraft by 2040. Apart from these many aircraft, India will also need 41,000 pilots and 47,000 technical staff.
