ICICI Bank Loan Fraud Case: The CBI, in its reply to the Bombay High Court in the ICICI Bank loan scam case, has opposed the bail granted to Videocon Group founder Venugopal Dhoot. After the hearing, the court has reserved its order and in the next hearing, the court will give the order.
CBI case is different from ED
The CBI’s lawyer said in an affidavit to the court that Venugopal Dhoot’s lawyer is saying that why the Enforcement Directorate did not arrest, then the ED’s case is different from the CBI’s and its investigation is limited to money laundering. But the CBI case is different and it has 120B and other corruption charges. During the hearing, Dhoot’s lawyer raised the issue of arrest and asked why the arrest after so many years? So the CBI lawyer said if he had been arrested in 2019, would it have been legal and how has it become illegal today?
Venugopal Dhoot is not cooperating in the investigation!
CBI’s counsel said that there are innumerable transactions in big companies, directors come and go, employees change. It has to be studied. Complete evidence is required for enquiry, and sometimes it is not available with the agency. We have mentioned in the memo that he was not cooperating in the investigation and was not giving complete information. The CBI counsel said that Dhoot and Kochhar were making a systematic effort to deliberately not appear for questioning when the CBI wanted to conduct simultaneous questioning. They were not appearing even after repeated calls. It was said by the CBI that Chanda Kochhar was arrested on 23 December 2023, then notice was given to Venugopal Dhoot, he was asked to appear for questioning but he did not come. Called again on 25th December but he did not come that day also. When he came on December 26, he was giving wrong information and misleading.
Venugopal Dhoot is in judicial custody
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the CBI to file its affidavit by Friday in response to a plea by Videocon Group founder Venugopal Dhoot seeking quashing of the FIR lodged in the alleged bank loan scam case. Dhoot has termed his arrest as illegal. The lawyer appearing for Dhoot told the court that Dhoot has 99 per cent blockage in his heart. In such a situation, a demand has been made to grant him bail. Let us tell you that in the ICICI-Videocon Bank loan fraud case, Videocon Group founder Venugopal Dhoot was arrested by the CBI on December 26, 2022 and he is currently in judicial custody. Earlier, on January 5, 2023, a special court in Mumbai had rejected the bail plea of Venugopal Dhoot. After which he has approached the Bombay High Court. Earlier on January 9, the Bombay High Court granted bail to former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak.
