See Mitski Paddle Across a Lake in Cinematic Music Video for ‘Star’

Mitski is on a journey in her latest music video.

On Tuesday, April 23, the indie-rocker, 33, shared the visual for her wistful track “Star,” which was featured on her latest album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.

Directed by Maegan Houang, who collaborated with Mitski on Puberty 2’s “Happy” and Laurel Hell’s “The Only Heartbreaker” and “Stay Soft,” the black-and-white music video is cinematic in nature and follows Mitski who paddles slowly across a fog-shrouded lake.

“Unlike the more narrative/concept-driven videos Mitski and I have done together in the past, I wanted this video to encapsulate the impressionistic circularity we all experience. Our lives oscillate between light and dark repeating itself in an endless cycle where nothing is permanent. The best moments are fleeting, but so are the bad,” Houang said in a statement.

According to a press release, the visual was filmed during summer 2023 on a small pond overnight and features the “My Love Mine All Mine” musician performing on a boat in real water alongside painted pieces of wood that create a mountain-like landscape.

The track itself has a timeless aesthetic with Mitski’s stunning, swelling vocals turning a ballad into something much more massive.

“That love is like a star, it’s gone / We just see it shining / It’s traveled very far, I’ll / Keep a leftover light burning / So you can keep looking up /Isn’t that worth holding on?” she croons on the track.

Mitski released her seventh studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We in September 2023 via Dead Oceans.
