Onion Export Ban: The Lok Sabha elections to be held in 2024 are now only 4 months away, so the Modi government does not want to take any risk regarding inflation before this general election. In such a situation, the government has taken a big decision in view of the rising prices of onion. The central government has decided to ban the export of onion till March 2024.
Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a notification regarding this decision. According to the notification, by amending the export policy of onion, it has been banned from free. The decision to ban onion export has come into effect from Friday, December 8, 2023. According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, the average price of onion in the retail market on December 8, 2023 is Rs 56.82 per kg. Whereas on December 8, 2022, the average price of onion was Rs 28.88 per kg. Onion prices have almost doubled (97 percent) in one year.
However, the government said that exemption can be given for export of onion under three circumstances. In which onion has been loaded on the ship before the issue of the first notification. Second, before the issuance of the notification, the shipping bill should have been paid and the vessel should have reached the port for loading of onions. In this situation, export approval will be given only when the authority confirms that the berthing of the ship has been done. And the third situation is that the onion to be exported has been handed over to the customs and it has been registered in the system. This discount will be available only till January 5, 2024.
Due to uneven rainfall and delay in sowing of Kharif onion, the area under onion cultivation remained less and the crop arrived late. Two days ago, Chrisin said in its report that due to expensive onions, the plates of vegetarians have become expensive. Earlier, the central government had also banned the export of wheat, rice and sugar. On Thursday, after the rise in sugar prices, the government has banned the production of ethanol from sugarcane so that the prices of sugar can be reduced in the domestic market.
