Mark Wahlberg Tore Meniscus Filming ‘Arthur the King’

Mark Wahlberg is opening up about an injury he faced while filming his new movie, Arthur the King.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight at a special pet adoption event and fan screening of the movie in Los Angeles on Monday, the 52-year-old actor revealed he tore his meniscus on the first day of shooting the adventure drama.

“Unfortunately, I tore my meniscus the first day, so all my training went out the window,” Wahlberg told the outlet about the incident. “Then it’s basically just about getting through it.”

“So I got to understand the suffering a little bit more than I wanted to,” he added.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the meniscus is a C-shaped piece of tough, rubbery cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the shinbone and the thighbone. It can be torn if you suddenly twist your knee while bearing weight on it.

The actor added that following the incident he went to the doctor, who told him that if he didn’t pause filming the injury could get worse.

“I just felt like, you know, it took a long time to get the movie off the ground, and we were in the middle of COVID, and if I had shut it down, I don’t know if we would’ve got it up and running again,” he recalled. “So I just kind of toughed it out, and I found different ways of getting through.”

Going into filming, Wahlberg added his wife, Rhea Durham, was worried about the safety of some of the movie’s more intense scenes. For one scene in particular, Wahlberg shared how his wife wasn’t pleased when he went on a zip line.

“She doesn’t think I need to be doing things that are too extreme,” he said. “I mean, I’m not doing any Tom Cruise type of stuff. But I do enough where it’s like, ‘Yeah, you don’t want to put yourself in harm’s way.'”

Earlier this month, the actor told PEOPLE more about his health routine and how important rest is for him.

Over the years, the actor’s early morning workout sessions have become legendary, as he often begins at 4 a.m. However, he revealed to PEOPLE at the LIV Golf Las Vegas Big Game Party that even he sometimes doesn’t want to work out at all.

“I feel it more often than you think,” Wahlberg told PEOPLE when asked if he ever feels like not exercising.

But, he says, he usually begins his day sitting in a 35-degree tub of water and ice, known as a cold plunge, and that gets him in the mood. 

“I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m awake, I’m alive.’ We’re a go right after that,” Wahlberg explained. “So I just go and I do the work.”

Wahlberg often posts videos of his workouts on social media, — earlier this week the actor revealed his impressive abs in a video on Instagram that showed him lifting his T-shirt — but he acknowledges that rest and recovery are “equally important.”
