Where did the word Bhogi come from?
The word Bhogi is derived from the root Bhunj. It means to eat or consume. On this day, after worshiping God, there is a law to make roti by applying Bhogi vegetable, millet or sesame seeds. Bhogi is a festival of consumption. On this morning the house and surroundings are cleaned. Rangoli is made in front of the door. All the people of the house take abhyanga bath and wear new clothes. On this day, there is a law to bathe by putting sesame seeds in the bath water. On the day of Bhogi, Maharashtra has a special Bhogi recipe of making mixed vegetable and millet bread.
It is customary to celebrate Bhogi with the prayer that Lord Indra prayed for the earth to grow bountiful crops year after year.
