Idris Elba’s Wife Sabrina Reflects on ‘Best Night Ever’ Wedding 5 Years Ago

Idris Elba and wife Sabrina Elba are as in love as ever, five years after saying “I do.”

Sabrina, who wed the actor in 2019, admitted on The Jennifer Hudson Show Wednesday, April 17, that she feels like time is flying by as the couple celebrate half a decade of marriage.

“It goes by so fast,” said the model and UN Goodwill Ambassador, 34. “I can’t even believe it. I feel like it was, like, yesterday. We’ve been together seven years now, that means. That’s wild to me.”

Reflecting on her and Idris’ wedding in Marrakesh, Morocco, she said, “It’s just the party you’ve always wanted, because everyone you love is there. And you receive that energy from them, that love from them, when it’s people you love. And it made it the best night ever.”

The wedding did involve some chaos, though, as they often do. Sabrina shared that while Idris’ family had to fly only a few hours from the U.K. to get to the destination event, her family in Canada “traveled 24 hours” to be there and “were not happy.”

The couple chose Marrakesh with the logic of meeting “kind of in the middle” for both of their families, and also to honor their roots in Africa, as she’s East African and Idris, 51, is West African.

“But I couldn’t have chosen the U.K. cause then I really would’ve gotten [flak],” she explained.

Jennifer Hudson also asked if Idris, who moonlights as a DJ, got behind the turntables at all on their special night — to which Sabrina revealed she’d told him that was not an option.

“My one thing, I was like, ‘Just please don’t DJ.’ Because if he starts DJing, he’s gone. … The sun will come up before that man goes home,” she said, before cheekily quipping, “ ‘And we got plans in the bedroom later, so you are not DJing.’ ”

Ironically, Sabrina ended up behind the DJ booth instead: “At some point, I was like, ‘I think I might go on the decks.’ I just was high on life. … And Idris was like, ‘I thought you said we couldn’t!’ ”

In 2022, the couple opened up to PEOPLE about their first three years of marriage, and the Luther star reflected on his view of the longevity of a relationship.

“I think never losing sight of the fact that it’s a journey is really important,” Idris said. “When you’re swimming, you don’t look up to count the laps, because you get tired very quickly. It’s a bit like that with marriage. I love anniversaries, but I don’t want to count the years.”

Thinking ahead, Idris went on to say that he’s looking forward to “harmony” in their lives together: “You just want to be at peace together and have that be sort of a continuous motion.”

Added Sabrina, who met her now-husband while he was filming The Mountain Between Us in 2017, “I also love the idea of seeing what changes. We’ve been together six years now, and we both changed so much. I like seeing that.”
