Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to test spices and baby food across the country. FSSAI will collect samples of these products of all brands from all over the country and test them. This step has been taken due to pesticides recently found in Everest and MDH spices. Singapore's Food Agency had found ethylene oxide in Everest Masala's fish curry masala. After this, the company's spices were banned in Singapore.
Orders sent to food commissioners of all states
A senior official told Live Mint that FSSAI has given orders in this regard to the food commissioners of all the states. He told that these samples will be collected from the manufacturing units of these companies. These will be sent to a lab capable of testing the pesticide ethylene oxide. Recently, action was taken against big spice brands in the country due to availability of the same pesticide in foreign markets. If the allegations are confirmed in the investigation, strict action will be taken against these brands.
Action was taken in Hong Kong and Singapore
Hong Kong's Center for Food Safety had banned three spices from MDH and one from Everest on April 5. Madras Curry Powder, Sambar Masala Powder and Curry Powder Mixed Masala Powder of MDH Group were banned. After this, last week the Singapore Food Agency had taken action against Everest's fish curry masala. It was also said that the customers who have purchased it should not use it. This can have far reaching consequences on their health.
