Prices of medicines increased under the National List of Essential Medicines

The drug pricing regulator or Drug Price Regulator of India has announced an annual increase of 0.0055 percent in the prices of medicines under the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). This increase has been made according to the annual change in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). There will be a slight increase in the prices of essential medicines including some painkillers, antibiotics and anti-infection medicines from April 1. This news has been received according to the report of economic news portal Economic Times.

Prices of medicines calculated on the basis of WPI data

The notice issued through the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) said that “On the basis of WPI data provided by the Office of the Economic Adviser, Department of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, 2022 The annual change in WPI works out to be (+) 0.00551 per cent during calendar year 2023 compared to the same period.”

The rates of medicines were increased marginally by 0.00551 percent.

This simply means that in comparison to the year 2022, a need has been felt to increase the prices of some essential medicines on the basis of Wholesale Price Index during the calendar year 2023 and their prices are being increased marginally by 0.00551 percent.

What do drug market experts say?

An industry insider said this is hardly news to please the pharma industry. Especially when this is nothing in comparison to the two huge price increases of 12 percent and 10 percent last year and the year before that i.e. in 2022. However, an official associated with an NGO said that this would be a good step which would maintain interest in maintaining the potency of these medicines.
