28,200 handsets and 20 lakh numbers used

The Telecom Ministry issued a press release saying that according to the analysis done by the Home Ministry and the state police, 28,200 mobile handsets have been found which have been used to commit cyber crimes. In the analysis done by the Department of Telecommunication, the department found that there are 20 lakh mobile numbers which have been used in these 28200 mobile handsets.

Re-verification of 20 lakh numbers will be done

The Ministry of Communication said that the department has asked the telecom service providers providing mobile services to block 28,200 such mobile handsets across the country and to re-verify the connections of these 20 lakh mobile numbers linked with the mobile handsets. And if the re-verification of mobile numbers fails, an order has been issued to immediately close these connections. The ministry said that the purpose of this integrated step is to ensure the integrity of the telecom infrastructure and secure digital environment along with the safety of common citizens.

Government strict on financial fraud

In view of the increasing online financial frauds in February 2024, the Financial Affairs Secretary also held a meeting in which it was told that 1.4 lakh mobile handsets related to financial fraud cases have been blocked by the Telecom Department. The government has also asked banks and financial institutions to launch 6 digit serial numbers instead of 10 digit numbers for commercial promotional calls.
