DGCA Order To Airlines: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered Indian airlines to make it mandatory for children up to 12 years of age to be accompanied by one of their parents. For this, children should be allotted tickets to travel on the same PNR only. Along with this, airline companies will also have to maintain records of this arrangement.
What did DGCA say in its order
DGCA has said in its order that “The airline will have to ensure that children up to 12 years of age will have to be allotted a seat only with one of their guardians i.e. parents. A record of this will also have to be maintained and it will have to be seen that That the PNR of the child is also the same as the PNR of the parents.”
Big decision taken after continuous complaints
In fact, there were continuous complaints that children were being made to sit separately among air passengers, especially those traveling in groups. This is happening if the passengers refuse to pay extra for the seat. Recently, a case came to light where a child had to travel the entire air journey sitting separately from his parents.
Order issued under Air Transport Circular
In this order issued under Air Transport Circular (ATC)-01 of the year 2024, it has been said that children up to 12 years of age should be allotted seats only with one of their parents. This rule will be applicable in case the child's seat has not already been assigned to the parent.
Globally, airlines charge money for preferred seat selection and if the passenger does not do so, the seat cannot be pre-booked. In this situation, often in passengers traveling in groups, their children have to travel by sitting on separate seats from their parents or guardians.
