D Gukesh Candidate Chess 2024: India's D Gukesh created history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament at the age of 17. With this victory, Gukesh became the youngest player to challenge the World Champion in the Candidates Chess Tournament. With this victory, the Indian star broke a 40-year-old record. Now Gukesh will get a chance to play against China's current World Cup champion Ding Lirin later this year.
Before Gukesh, the record for winning the Candidates Chess Tournament at the youngest age was held by Garry Kasparov of Russia, who had qualified to challenge Natoli Karpov of his own country in 1984. At that time Kasparov was 22 years old. But now, Gukesh has achieved this feat at the age of 17.
Let us tell you that to win the tournament, Gukesh played a draw with Hikaru Nakamura of America in the last round. Gukesh scored 9 out of 14 points in the tournament. Candidates Chess Tournament is organized for players who want to challenge the world champion.
After winning the tournament, Gukesh said, “Very happy. I was watching that exciting game (between Fabio Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi) and then I went for a walk with my colleague, I think it helped me.” Gukesh was at the top position in the points table before the last round. His last round ended in a draw, due to which Gukesh had to wait for the result of the match played between Fabio Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi. After 109 moves, the match between Fabio Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi was also a draw, due to which Gukesh remained in first place and won the tournament.
Becomes the second Indian to win the Candidates Chess Tournament
It is noteworthy that D Gukesh became the second Indian player to win the Candidates Chess Tournament. Before Gukesh, India's Vishwanathan Anand had won this tournament. After Gukesh's victory, Vishwanathan Anand wrote on X, “Congratulations to D Gukesh for becoming the youngest challenger. Proud of what you have achieved. I am personally very proud. Enjoy this moment.”
