BIS Rules: Your favorite shoes may disappear from the market, the effect of this new rule is visible

In the coming few days, your favorite shoes and slippers may disappear from the shops. The stocks of footwear of many big and popular foreign brands have already started getting exhausted. A recent change in the rules in India is being held responsible for this.

The remaining stock is being sold

According to an ET report, Armani Exchange, Stocks of brands like Superdry, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, US Polo Association have started getting exhausted in India. Most of these brands have either removed their products from online and offline stores or are selling the remaining stock.

Quality Control Order of BIS

Actually India The government has made changes in the quality standards regarding shoes and slippers. Now, verification from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is necessary for factories making products like shoes and slippers sold in India. For this, BIS had issued a quality control order. According to the order, BIS certification is mandatory for factories manufacturing final products.

What do the new rules say?

Along with this, BIS certification is also mandatory for those factories. , which is making main components like rubber, PVC i.e. polyurethane sole and heel. This quality control order of BIS was implemented for leather shoes in July last year. Whereas the rules for sports shoes, sandals, clogs, spillers etc. were to be implemented from January 2024, which has now been extended till August.

The products are made outside in these countries

The problem with many brands like Armani Exchange, Superdry, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, US Polo Association is that their production in India is very less. These brands are manufacturing most of their products in countries like China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and importing them to India. Unless the factories located in foreign countries are verified by BIS, brands cannot import their products into India. This is affecting the supply.

These brands now have only two options left. Either they should get the plants located in other countries certified by BIS or focus on manufacturing in India itself.
