Thalassemia treatment

Thalassemia is treated according to the severity of the disease, health problems, and other symptoms. Treatment of Thalassemia mainly includes the following treatments-

-The patient has to donate blood every two to three weeks, due to which the level of hemoglobin in his body does not decrease. Repeated blood transfusion increases the iron level in the body, which is called iron overload. Due to increase in iron level, internal organs of the body including heart and liver start getting damaged. To treat this condition, the patient is given special medicines, with the help of which excess iron is removed from the body through urine.

-Apart from this, the patient is also given a healthy diet and other supplements (like folic acid), which help the body to produce healthy red blood cells.

-Bone marrow or hematopoietic cell transplantation also has the potential to cause thalassemia. These transplants involve high doses of chemotherapy to destroy the cells causing thalassemia, which are then replaced with healthy cells obtained from the donor. The donor must be a person whose human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matches the patient. Bone marrow donor registry has now been opened in India for bone marrow transplant of patients suffering from this disease.
