Internet advocacy watchdog Access Now has released a report stating that India has the number one internet shutdown worldwide. In the last 5 consecutive years, the maximum number of internet shutdowns have happened in India.

Internet shut down 84 times last year

According to the Access Now report, there were 187 internet shutdowns across the world last year, out of which 84 happened in India alone. Out of this, the internet was shut down in Jammu and Kashmir about 49 times. Here the internet was shut down 16 times continuously which lasted from the month of January to February. After this, the net was shut down about 12 times in Rajasthan, then the internet had to be shut down 7 times in West Bengal as well. The reason for shutting down the internet was violence and political instability.

There was a loss of 4,500 crores in 2021

Due to this, in the last year i.e. 2021, the internet was closed for about 1,157 hours, in which there was a total loss of Rs 4300 crore. Actually, when the net remains closed, all financial transactions etc. stop, due to which there is a loss of crores on a large scale. In the year 2021, about 5.9 crore people were affected due to internet shutdown.

Apart from India, the internet was shut down about 22 times in Ukraine and 18 times in Iran last year.
