8 Crew Members Hospitalized After Accident on Eddie Murphy Film Set

New details are emerging regarding an on-set accident during filming for Eddie Murphy’s upcoming movie The Pickup.

Local outlet WSB-TV 2 reported on April 25 that first responders took eight people to hospitals following a two-vehicle crash on-set, citing the Georgia State Patrol. A spokesperson for Amazon MGM Studios previously told PEOPLE that the April 20 incident took place while filming an action scene, resulting in several crew members being injured on the film’s Atlanta set.

The crash occurred between an armored GMC car and a BMW vehicle as the production filmed a stunt sequence, per the outlet. Both vehicles flipped over and veered off a road after colliding. Two crew members who were seated in the back of the armored car were ejected when the car’s back doors opened, the outlet reported, citing GSP, adding that they sustained life-threatening injuries.

A third passenger in that back area — five crew members were in the back of the armored car — also sustained serious injuries, though they were not ejected, the outlet further reported. Following the incident, WSB-TV stated that five people were taken to Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital and three more were taken to WellStar Cobb Medical Center in Austell, Georgia for treatment.

Georgia State Patrol and Grady Memorial Hospital did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

One crew member injured during the incident appears to be dolly grip Marvin Haven. A GoFundMe set up in Haven’s name on April 25 has already raised more than $70,000 toward his injuries.

“We are so grateful and blessed that our beloved friend is still alive, but his road to recovery will undoubtedly be long, difficult, and faced with unimaginable challenges,” the page reads.

The organizer of Haven’s GoFundMe did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

A source on the film’s production tells PEOPLE that they “choked up watching the video” of the incident. “It’s so traumatizing,” the source says. “To know my friends who I consider family are being thrown around the back of the armored truck it’s just so infuriating. It shouldn’t have happened.”

The Associated Press previously reported that neither Murphy, 63, nor other cast members on the film were present on set at the time of the accident. The Pickup also features Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, Andrew Dice Clay, Eva Longoria, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Jack Kesy and Marshawn Lynch.

“On April 20, an accident occurred on the set of The Pickup during a rehearsed 2nd unit action sequence,” an Amazon MGM Studios spokesperson told PEOPLE on April 23. “Unfortunately, the sequence did not go as planned and several members of the crew were injured as a result.”

The studio stated at that time that safety measures were in place when the incident occured, saying that “all safety precautions were reviewed prior to and monitored during the shoot.”
