Nitin Gadkari Announces End Of Toll Tax Collection At Highway To Launch Satellite Based Toll Tax System

GPS Toll Collection System: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that soon a satellite based system will be launched for toll collection on National Highways in the country. The existing system of toll collection will be abolished. In the month of December last year itself, the Road Transport Minister had announced that NHAI will roll out the new system of toll collection on the highway from March 2024.

Toll tax will be deducted from bank account

Nitin Gadkari told news agency ANI that toll tax equal to the distance traveled by people traveling on the highway will be deducted from their bank accounts. In response to a question regarding expensive toll tax, Nitin Gadkari said that due to the highway, people also save time and fuel. He told that earlier it used to take 9 hours to travel from Mumbai to Pune but now this journey can be completed in just 2 hours.

How will GPS based toll system work?

Obviously, GPS based toll collection system is going to be started in the coming days, but the question arises that how will this new system work. NHAI will launch GPS technology based toll collection system. In which drivers driving on the National Highway will not need to stop at the toll plaza to pay toll charges. Instead, the amount will be deducted from the bank account of the vehicle owners.

Automatic number plate reader required

The GPS based toll system will be linked to the GPS coordinates of the vehicle running on the highway. And as soon as the vehicle reaches the collection point, the toll fee will be automatically deducted from the bank account. For this system to work, all vehicles must have number plates that can be monitored through satellite through GPS. For this, Automatic Number Plate Reader cameras will be installed on the highway which can read GPS-enabled number plates. Only through this, money will be deducted from the customers' bank accounts.

Fastag reduces waiting time at toll plaza

At present, Fastags are used for toll collection on the highway. Fastag was made mandatory for four-wheelers from February 2021. Toll is collected through RFID technology. Fastag has a small RFID chip that communicates with toll booth readers. In 2018-19, the average waiting time for any vehicle at the toll plaza was 714 seconds, which has come down to 47 seconds after the launch of Fastag. Due to this, common people are saving time as well as fuel.
