The Government of India has expressed objection to a recent report issued by ILO regarding unemployment in the country. India says that the International Labor Organization has not presented the data properly in preparing its report on unemployment and there are discrepancies in its figures.
Meeting held twice with ILO
< p>According to an ET report, the government has formally expressed its objection to the report. For this, Labor and Employment Secretary Sunita Dwar called senior officials of ILO and informed them about the government's displeasure over the recent report. After the report released last month, the government has held two rounds of meetings with ILO officials.
This claim has been made in the report
International Labor Organization last month Employment Report 2024 was released, which has been prepared in collaboration with the Institute for Human Development. In that report it was claimed that youth constitute 83 percent of the unemployed workforce in India. According to the report, out of every 100 unemployed people in India, 83 are youth. The government does not agree with this.
Government data on unemployment
According to the government, the unemployment rate among youth (people aged 15 to 29 years) was 7 percent in 2019. Which was reduced to only 5 percent in 2022. In the case of adults (people between 30 years and 59 years), the unemployment rate was 1 percent in 2019 and this rate remained stable at 1 percent in 2022.
The government does not consider them unemployed
The Ministry of Labor and Employment says that students constitute 35 percent of India's youth. At the same time, 22 percent of Indian youth are engaged in household work. According to the government, those youth cannot be kept in the category of unemployed. A large part of the youth is engaged in part-time employment. They also cannot be called unemployed.
Objections to ILO figures
The government's view is that many such factors were not taken into consideration while preparing the ILO report. Is. For example, the data of international mobility i.e. people going to work in other countries and gig and platform workers i.e. people doing formal employment for a few months of the year have also not been included in the report. In this way, serious errors have been made regarding the data in the ILO report and they have been presented wrongly.
