The Bharatnet package has been approved by the Union Cabinet on Saturday. Giving information about this, a top official of the Department of Telecom (DoT) said that 1.3 trillion ($ 17 billion) will be invested to take forward the next phase of the government’s ambitious Bharatnet project. According to Business Standard news, Bharatnet aims to provide fixed-line broadband connectivity to every Indian village.
Purpose of Bharatnet
According to the news, a new operation model was also adopted in the cabinet meeting to take forward the next phase of Bharatnet, which aims to cover 674,000 villages under 250,000 gram panchayats across the country within the next two months. Let us tell you, in August 2020, the government had announced to connect every village in the country through optical fiber cable to provide at least 100 Mbps bandwidth of the Internet. At present, 194,000 villages are connected with 584,000 km of fiber optic cables laid so far.
Model of linking Gram Panchayats
Bharatnet package connects gram panchayats through various models like state-based model, private sector model and CPSU model. In the next phase, it will now be setup by a system where rural entrepreneurs (called Udyami) will be selected in every village to lay cables in individual homes and maintain them.
According to the news, the capital cost of bringing the optical fiber cable up to the village level will be borne by the government, but the entrepreneur will be responsible for taking it forward. Through Bharatnet, the distribution of e-governance, e-health, e-education, e-banking, internet and other services in rural India has to be made easier.
