According to layoffs.fyi, a compiled data of layoffs by tech companies, 104 tech companies globally have laid off more than 26,000 employees in just a few weeks of January i.e. 15 days. If we take the average of firing of employees, then every day more than 1,600 employees have been fired. It also includes employees of India.
The number of layoffs increased every quarter
According to the Retrenchment Tracker website, the number of employees leaving jobs has increased from the first quarter of the year 2022. More employees have lost their jobs in every quarter than in the previous quarter. In the first quarter of the year 2022, 10,000 jobs were lost, which were laid off by 34 tech startups. At the same time, during the last quarter of 2022, 400 tech companies fired more than 74,000 employees.
More than 154,000 employees were laid off in a year
Including India, 1,024 tech companies in the world laid off 154,000 employees. Whereas in 2020, 400 tech companies laid off 60,000 employees.
30,000 jobs were created in India during two years
Byju has laid off 2,500 employees. Unacademy fired 1,000 employees in April. According to Mint’s report, more than 30 thousand employees have been laid off in the next two years. At the same time, this year Amazon, Facebook, Twitter and other companies are preparing to fire employees.
Will the process of retrenchment stop?
At the global level, so far in 2023, the jobs of such a large number of people are creating a crisis for the employees. However, in many media reports, experts have been quoted as saying that tech companies can reduce the process of layoffs in the middle of the year 2023. According to Moneycontrol, the Indian startup edtech laid off 20,000 employees last year.
