Sunil Gavaskar: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not been a part of Team India for the last two T20 series. Both these senior players were neither included in the T20 series played on the New Zealand tour nor were given a place in the T20 series against Sri Lanka. Now both these veterans are out of Team India even in the domestic T20 series against New Zealand. In such a situation, questions are arising whether Virat and Rohit’s T20 International career is over here or can they continue playing in this format till T20 World Cup 2024? When Sunil Gavaskar was asked a question about this, he replied something like this.
In a conversation with India Today, Sunil Gavaskar said, ‘The way I am looking at these decisions, it seems that the T20 World Cup is to be held next year and the new selection committee wants to give opportunities to more and more youngsters here. However, this does not mean at all that the names of Rohit or Kohli will not be considered. If both of them continue their good performance in 2023, then they will be included in the Indian squad for T20 World Cup 2024.
On keeping Virat and Rohit out of the T20 squad against New Zealand, Gavaskar says, “With the Test series against Australia to be played, the selectors may have given them a break so that they can come back fresh in this crucial series.” The Indian team should be benefited.
Team India playing cricket continuously
At present, the Indian team is playing back to back cricket. Immediately after the end of one series, another series starts. In such a situation, playing cricket continuously can increase the workload for the player. That’s why the selectors are also giving rest to the players in turn. Team India has strong bench strength and this is the reason why even after resting big players like Virat and Rohit, Team India looks stronger than the opposition team.
