Science News: Today technology has developed a lot. Things which were not possible for humans some time back are now slowly becoming possible due to technology. Now a device has been developed that can detect and analyze cancer cells in blood samples. This may reduce the chances of biopsy surgery. The device, developed by researchers at the University of Technology, can help doctors monitor the healing process. Information about this device was recently published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics. According to the United States National Institute of Health (NIH), the estimated number of cancer cases in India is estimated to be 14,61,427 in 2022. It has been said that one out of nine people in the country is likely to get cancer.
Cancer Cell Detection: Currently, cancer is diagnosed through this technology
Cancer is currently diagnosed in three ways, according to the NIH’s National Cancer Institute. This includes laboratory tests, imaging tests, and biopsies. When a person is suspected to have cancer, surgery is needed to make a definitive diagnosis.
Cancer Cell Detection: What is the name of the new device?
The name of this device is ‘Static Droplet Microfluidic’. The device can rapidly detect tumor cells that have migrated away from the tumor and entered the bloodstream. The device uses metabolic markers of cancer to differentiate tumor cells from normal blood cells.
Cancer cell detection: how does the new device work?
Giving information about this, Dr. Sydney University of Technology. “In 1920, Otto Heinrich Warburg, a German physiologist and Nobel Prize winner in medicine in 1931, discovered that cancer cells consume a lot of glucose and produce more lactate, which is acidic in nature,” Majid Varkiani Explained. Key, this device monitors single cells for increased lactate using a pH sensitive fluorescent dye that detects acidity around cells.
Varakiani said that among billions of blood cells, just one liter of blood can contain one tumor cell. This makes it difficult to detect tumor cells. Varciani explained that the new detection technique consists of 38,400 cells, which are able to separate and classify multiple metabolically active tumor cells. Once tumor cells are identified with this tool, genetic and molecular analysis is performed. It can help diagnose and classify cancer and help doctors create an individualized treatment plan.
