Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka: The Afghanistan team missed out on making a place in the Super-4 of the 2023 Asia Cup. The team had to face a close defeat by 2 runs in a do or die match against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka had scored 291 runs in 50 overs after playing first in this match. After this, Afghanistan had to achieve this target in 37.1 overs to reach Super-4.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said after the defeat against Sri Lanka that he was proud of his players who gave their 100 per cent on the field despite their disappointing two-run loss to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. However, he also apologized to the fans.

After the two-run defeat against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said, I am very disappointed with this (defeat and not reaching Super-4). We challenged well. We gave our 100 per cent. Proud of the way the team played. I think we have played good cricket in the last two years in the ODI format.

He further said, “We are still learning a lot. We have learned a lot of positive things from this tournament. We are closer to the World Cup. We will learn from what we did wrong here and do better in the World Cup. supported us a lot. We tried our best to give something back to them. We feel sorry for them.”

Sri Lankan captain did not expect victory

At the same time Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka was feeling relieved that the team somehow managed to win. He said, “It was very difficult. It was difficult to defend this score. Nabi played a brilliant inning, which almost took the match out of our hands. But we managed to win in the end.”
