Sarcoma: Sarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive form of cancer. It occurs mainly in soft tissues or bone. The prevalence of this cancer in adults is about 1 to 2 percent, but given its severity, this cancer is considered very dangerous. The main reason for this is that sarcoma spreads rapidly in the bloodstream and the mortality rate is also very high. Although the incidence of sarcoma in women is relatively low, uterine sarcoma, also known as leiomyosarcoma, is the most common type.

Uterine Sarcoma:

Leiomyosarcoma accounts for about 2 to 5 percent of ovarian cancers, and it occurs primarily in women between the ages of 50 and 70. The incidence of soft tissue sarcoma in women is 2 in a thousand, which shows that the incidence of this cancer is very low. Nevertheless, when it does occur, the consequences are severe.

Causes of sarcoma:

Sarcoma can have various causes. Hereditary syndromes are a major cause, which increases the likelihood of developing cancer. In addition, exposure to chemical carcinogens, prior radiation or chemotherapy treatment, and lymphedema also increase the risk of sarcoma. Sarcoma is especially likely to develop in patients who have previously received cancer treatment.

Diagnosis and treatment of sarcoma:

Sarcoma is a type of cancer that can be cured with proper treatment in the early stages. Therefore, early diagnosis is very important. The main treatment options for early-stage sarcoma include surgery and radiation therapy. Some patients also require chemotherapy, especially when the stage of cancer is more severe. Surgery, in which the cancerous part is removed, is the primary method of treating sarcoma. Radiation therapy is used to destroy any remaining cancer cells after surgery. Chemotherapy is also used in some cases, which is very helpful in preventing cancer cells from growing.

Advanced sarcoma:

In the advanced stages of sarcoma, when cancer has spread to other organs such as the lungs or bones, the number of treatment options is limited. Treatment options such as chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy are used at this stage. Targeted therapy involves targeting specific proteins, thereby stopping the growth of cancer cells. Immunotherapy involves boosting the immune system, which makes the body better able to fight cancer.

Modern treatment methods:

Nowadays, advanced methods such as NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) panels are used to detect active areas of sarcoma, allowing for more targeted treatment. In this panel treatment, the genetic characteristics of the affected areas are studied, making it easier to plan the right treatment. In short, sarcoma is a very serious cancer, but it can be controlled with timely diagnosis and treatment. This makes early diagnosis and prompt treatment very important. Treatment and outcome depend on the patient's age, health, and stage of cancer, so each patient needs a different treatment plan.
