Before knowing the path to heaven in India, one has to know the mythological story behind it.
After the Mahabharata war, when the five Pandavas, along with their wives Draupadi, came to perform penance in the Himalayas instead of the palace, each in turn suffered the consequences of their deeds on their final journey to heaven.
No one survived except Yudhishthir. It is believed that Yudhishthir was accompanied by a dog, who reached heaven by walking on the path to heaven.
