Indian Rupee: The currency of any country is a symbol of its culture, history and pride. The specialties of the country are honored through the photographs present on it. In India, different symbols on the notes ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 500 symbolize this. Countries around the world have expressed their gratitude to their founders by placing their photographs on their currency.
Every note in India has the photo of Mahatma Gandhi, in America George Washington, in Pakistan Mohammad Ali Jinnah and in China Mao Zedong. But, do you know that earlier instead of Mahatma Gandhi, someone else’s photo was to be placed on Indian notes. However, that decision was later changed. Let us know about this in detail on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
Ashok Pillar of Sarnath was given place on the first note
According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the brainstorming on symbols for the Indian rupee started after India got independence on August 15, 1947. After this, India became a republic on January 26, 1950. During this period RBI continued issuing notes. The Government of India introduced a new design of 1 rupee note in 1949. In this, symbols had to be selected for independent India. Initially there was discussion that Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait should be installed. Some designs were also prepared. After this, Ashoka Pillar of Sarnath got a place on the notes by common consent.
Mahatma Gandhi’s photo appeared on rupees for the first time in 1969
For many years after independence, notes continued to celebrate India’s rich heritage and progress. The notes of the 1950s and 60s featured images of animals like tigers and deers. Apart from this, Hirakud Dam and Aryabhatta Satellite were also given place on the notes. In the year 1969, on the occasion of the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, his portrait got a place on the Indian rupee for the first time. In this, Gandhiji is shown sitting and his Sevagram Ashram is visible behind.
There has also been discussion on putting pictures of these people on the notes.
In the year 1987, Rajiv Gandhi’s government introduced Rs 500 notes. For the first time, Mahatma Gandhi was given a place on Rs 500 note. After this, RBI started Mahatma Gandhi Series in 1996. With this, the picture of the Father of the Nation appeared on every note. Apart from this, apart from Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, discussion has also been raised to give place to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha on the notes.
