LPG Price Hike: From March 1, 2023, government oil companies made domestic and commercial LPG cylinder refills expensive. A question was asked to the government regarding this in the Rajya Sabha. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri defended the decision to hike LPG prices, saying that from April 2020 to February 2023, there has been a jump of 235 per cent in international LPG prices, while domestic LPG prices in India have increased by only 89.7 per cent. has only increased.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, the Petroleum Minister said that India imports 60 per cent of its domestic LPG consumption. He said that the government still modulates the domestic LPG prices. Hardeep Puri said that the Saudi contract prices on the basis of which domestic LPG prices are determined used to be $ 236 per MT in April 2020, which has increased to $ 790 per MT in February 2023. That is, there has been a jump of 236 percent in 3 years. But the domestic LPG prices have been increased only by 89.7 per cent. Rajya Sabha MP Javed Ali Khan had asked questions to the government. He also asked the government whether there has been any increase in the prices of LPG in the international market in February 2023, to which the Petroleum Minister did not give a direct answer.

The Petroleum Minister told that in May 2020, the domestic LPG cylinder used to be 581.5 per cent, which is now being available for Rs 1103 in March 2023. He said that the prices for the beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Yojana have increased only by 55.2 per cent. The Petroleum Minister said that the government decides the prices of domestic LPG while the prices of commercial LPG are fixed by the LPG companies themselves.

Hardeep Puri said that government oil companies have suffered huge losses on selling LPG cylinders. The government has recently compensated the loss caused to these companies by giving Rs 22,000 crore. The Petroleum Minister informed that a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder is being given to the beneficiaries of PM Ujjwala Yojana for refilling up to 12 cylinders in 2022-23 and these consumers have to pay only Rs 903 per cylinder.

When asked about the price of LPG cylinders in neighboring countries based on Indian currency, the Petroleum Minister said that for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder, one had to pay Rs 1259.64 in Pakistan, Rs 1235.55 in Sri Lanka and Rs 1137.33 in Nepal. Is. That is, there is a difference of only Rs 34 in the prices of LPG cylinders in India and Nepal.
