What diseases can pets get?
Infectious diseases that spread from animals to humans are called zoonotic diseases or zoonoses. Occasionally, pets with zoonotic pathogens may appear ill. But zoonotic disease carriers often do not show any symptoms. Zoonoses can be transmitted directly from pets to humans. Zoonoses can occur through contact with animal saliva, body fluids, and feces. According to studies, the risk of zoonoses from pets is low. Dogs and cats are major reservoirs of zoonotic infections caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Capanocytophaga bacteria are present in the dog’s mouth and saliva. Which can spread to people by coming in contact with a dog or by a dog bite. It doesn’t make many people sick, but the bacteria can spread to people with weakened immune systems, resulting in serious illness.
Feline-associated zoonoses include several fecal-oral diseases, such as giardiasis, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, and toxoplasmosis. This means that it is important to wash your hands or use gloves after handling your cat’s litter tray. Cat bites and scratches can also lead to infection.
Dogs and cats are both reservoirs of the methicillin-resistant bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and close contact with pets is recognized as a significant risk factor for zoonotic transmission. It is not just dogs and cats that can spread disease to humans. Birds, turtles and fish can also spread the disease.
