Indian Railways: A new case of Indian Railways has come to the fore. Accordingly, in a 23-year-old case, the Railways had to pay a heavy fine. Railways had charged Rs 20 extra from the passenger. After this, the passenger lodged a complaint with the Mathura Consumer Forum.
The Consumer Forum, while giving its verdict, had imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 instead of Rs 20 on the passenger. Now a discount of 5 thousand rupees has been given by the forum. It has been ordered to pay the remaining amount within 30 days. The case dates back to December 1999, when a lawyer, Tungnath Chaturvedi, approached the consumer forum alleging that he was charged an extra Rs 20 for his train ticket.
Rs 5,000 reduction in fine
However, the Railways had approached the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and filed a petition against the decision of the district-level consumer body. However, after six months of investigation, the State Commission has blamed the Railways in this matter. However, a few days ago the forum had reduced the amount of the fine by Rs 5,000.
Case fought for public interest
According to the Times of India report, Chaturvedi said that in the last 23 years, the Indian Railways did not accept its mistake. He said that thousands of rupees have been spent in the legal proceedings. I have fought the case not for Rs 20 but for larger public interest.
Railway did not give refund
On December 25, 1999, when passengers were traveling from Mathura to Moradabad by railway, the ticket clerk overcharged two tickets purchased on their behalf. The ticket price was Rs 35, but the clerk charged Rs 90 for two tickets. The passenger informed that the refund was not issued after giving information about it from the Railways.
