The central government has postponed the ban on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra small factor computers and servers till November 1. In a late night notification, the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that the August 3 notification on import restrictions would be effective from November 2023.
A day earlier, the decision to ban the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers was rejected and there was a possibility of delay in implementing this decision. At such a time, the government will ban the import of laptops and computers from November 1. An official said that keeping in view the global supply system, Liberal Transitional Arrangement has been notified for these imports till October 31, 2023.
Valid license required for restricted import
According to the notification, the import consignment without import license can be cleared till October 31, 2023. The notification states that with effect from November 1, 2023, clearance of import shipments will require a valid license for restricted imports. According to ET’s report, the clarification has been issued after industry representatives met government officials and assured them to increase capacity to promote local production.
Licenses being given from the portal
A portal has been prepared by DGFT, under which companies are being helped. License for import of electronic equipment is being given from here in a few hours. At the same time, officials have said that clarification can be issued on companies seeking license for laptops, tablets and other electronic devices prohibited from DGFT import. The purpose of seeking license from companies was to collect information.
Make in India will get a boost
Officials say that the central government’s move to ban the import of these equipment will give a boost to the PLI scheme and other Make in India initiatives for information technology hardware. At the same time, it is also believed that companies importing electronic goods can apply for multiple licenses depending on the number of factories they have in India or elsewhere. Apart from this, domestic products will also get a boost.
