Ranji Trophy History: Ranji Trophy was first played in the year 1934-35. This domestic tournament has been organized for the last almost 88 years, but do you know how this tournament got its name Ranji Trophy? Actually, the Ranji Trophy is named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Nawanagar (currently Jamnagar) state in British-ruled India. He was the Maharaja of this state from 1907 to 1933. Before this, he earned a lot of name in cricket. He was the first cricketer from India, who got a chance to play for the England cricket team.

How did the Ranji Trophy tournament start?

Maharaja Ranjit Singh played 15 Test matches for England between 1896 and 1902. He scored 989 runs for England, while the average was 45. Actually, India did not have a cricket team at that time, but Ranjit Singh continued to play first-class cricket for Cambridge University and county cricket for Sussex. However, Maharaja Ranjit Singh died in the year 1933. After which plans were made to start a domestic tournament in his name in India.

Mumbai is the most successful team in Ranji Trophy

However, this idea took shape in the year 1934-35. Started a domestic tournament in the name of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, whose name was Ranji Trophy. At the same time, the first match of this tournament was played on 4 November 1934. The teams of Madras and Mysore were face to face in this match. This match between Madras and Mysore was played at Chepauk ground. The trophy was donated by the Maharaja of Patiala for this tournament. Let us tell that the Mumbai team has become the winner in this domestic tournament for the maximum number of times so far. Mumbai has won a total of 41 Ranji Trophy. The second most successful team in this tournament has been Karnataka, which has won this title 8 times.
