What is self-proclaimed brother?
There are eight temples of Shri Ganesh in different areas around Mumbai and Pune in MaharashtraThey are called Ashtavinayakas. These temples are also called Swayambhu temples. Swayambhu means that the deity appeared here by himself, that is, no one installed him as an idol. These temples are also mentioned in various Puranas like Ganesha and Mudgal Purana. These temples are very ancient and hold historical significance. The pilgrimage to these temples is also known as Ashtavinayaka Tirtha. These are eight temples. Ashtavinayaka literally means 'eight Ganeshas', all these temples refer to the temples of Bappa found in 8 different parts of Maharashtra.

Shree Moreshwar – Morgaon
There is a temple of Moreshwar Vinayak in Morgaon area of Pune. Ashtavinayaka Yatra starts with the darshan of Moreshwar. The temple of Moreshwar Ganapati is located in Morgaon village of Baramati taluka of Pune district. It is located in the south-east direction of Pune. This temple is about 15 km from Baramati. Located about 80 km from Pune, the Moreshwar temple has big minarets and long stone walls on all four corners. According to the legend, the four gates are considered to be the symbols of the four eras – Satyayug, Tretayug, Dwaparyug and Kaliyug. The idol of Lord Ganesha is in a sitting posture here. There is also a statue of Nandi here. It is said that Lord Ganesha killed the demon Sindhurasur while riding a peacock at this place. That is why he is also called Mayureshwar.
Sri Chintamani Temple – Theur
Chintamani Temple is located at the confluence of three rivers Bhima, Mula and Mutha in Theur village. Chintamani is the second Ganesha among the Ashtavinayakas. Chintamani Ganapati Temple is located in Theur in Haveli taluka of Pune district. Theur is an hour away on the Pune-Solapur highway. This temple is located about 30 kilometers from Pune. It is believed that those who visit this temple with a true heart, all their confusions are dispelled and peace is attained. There is a story associated with this temple that Lord Brahma performed penance at this place to calm his disturbed mind.
Mister Siddhivinayak Temple – Siddhtek
Siddhivinayak Ganapati Temple is located in Siddhatek in Karjat taluka of Ahmednagar district. Hehe temple is located on the Bhima river, 200 km from Pune. This temple is said to be about 200 years old. Legend has it that Siddhivinayak temple is built on the top of a mountain where Lord Vishnu attained Siddhi. Its main entrance is towards the north. One has to go up the hill to circumambulate this temple. The idol of Ganesha in Siddhivinayak temple is 3 feet high and 2.5 feet wide. Here Lord Ganesha's trunk is straight towards the hand.
Shri Mahaganpati Temple – Ranjangaon
There is a Mahaganapati temple in Ranjangaon of Shirur taluka of Pune district. This temple is believed to be of 9th-10th century. Ganapati is the fourth among the Ashtavinayakas. The idol of Lord Ganesha at this place has a right trunk. This temple is 2 hours away from Ozar on Pune-Ahmednagar road. There is a very big and beautiful entrance on the east side of the temple. There is an idol of Lord Ganesha here.
Shree Vighneshwar – Ozer
This temple is located in Ozar in Junnar taluka of Pune. Vighneshwar is the fifth Ganesha. This temple is built about 85 km on the Pune-Nashik road. According to a legend, Lord Ganesha killed a demon named Vighnasura at this place when he was torturing the sages. Since then this temple is known as Vighneshwar, Vighnaharta and Vighnahar.
Shri Girijatmaj – Lenyadri
Girijatmaj Ashtavinayak Temple is the temple of the sixth Ganesha in Lenyadri village of Junnar taluka of Pune district. Which means the soul of Girija, the son of Goddess Parvati, i.e. Ganesha. This temple is located on the Pune-Nashik highway, 90 km from Pune. It is built in the caves of Lenyadri mountain. Girijatmaj Vinayak temple is in this cave. These caves are also known as Ganesh caves. Nashik is at a distance of two and a half hours via Phata-Chakan-Rajgurunagar-Narayangaon-Junnar. One has to climb about 300 stairs to reach the temple. The second feature is that this entire temple is built by putting a single big stone.
Shri Varadvinayak Temple – Mahad
Varadvinayak Temple is located in Mahad in Khalapur taluka of Raigad district. According to a belief, Varadvinayak blesses the devotees to fulfill all their wishes. It is also said that there is a lamp named Nanddeep in this temple. Varadvinayak is the seventh Ganesha. This temple is located at a distance of 6 km from Khopoli in Raigad district.
Mister Ballaleshwar Temple – Pali
Located in Pali village of Raigad in Konkan, this temple is named after Ganesh devotee Shri Ballaleshwar i.e. Ballal. The eighth Ganesha is Ballaleshwar. The story of Ballal is said to be that due to his devotion towards Ganesh, Ballal was left in the forest by his family with the idol of Ganesh. Where he used to spend time only in the memory of Lord Ganesha. Pleased with this, Ballal had the darshan of Lord Ganesha at this place and later this temple was built in the name of Ballal. This temple is located at a distance of 111 km from Pune. It is two hours away from Pune via Chandni Chowk-Pashan-Balewadi-Maharve. It is 38 km from Khopoli in Raigad district.
