FSSAI To Conduct National Surveillance Of Milk And Milk Products To Control Milk And Milk Adulteration

FSSAI to Surveillance on Milk and Milk Products: Food regulator FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is going to take tough steps to crack down on spurious milk and milk products. FSSAI informed on Thursday that the regulator is going to run a nationwide campaign to crack down on spurious milk and milk products. Similarly, samples of milk and milk products like curd, mawa, chhena, paneer, ghee, butter, ice cream etc. will be collected from different parts of India and tested. The collection of these samples will be done at the state, district and block level.

Why will FSSAI run the campaign?

According to the report published in Business Line, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said that the reason behind examining milk and milk products is that milk is an integral part of people’s diet in India. People of all age groups consume milk and milk products in the country. With the changing lifestyle, people have become very health conscious these days and due to this the consumption of milk has also increased in the country. In such a situation, FSSAI is taking this step to crack down on spurious milk and its products. In this survey, FSSAI will assess both quality and safety standards and identify adulterated centres. After this, a guideline will be issued according to the report and action will also be taken. Both organized and unorganized sectors have been included in this investigation.

Five surveys have been done since 2011-

The National Milk Safety and Quality Survey was conducted in the year 2018 in the States and Union Territories. In this, a total of 6,432 milk samples were taken from organized and unorganized sectors. The samples were collected from cities and towns with a population of more than 50,000. Apart from this, in the year 2020, FSSAI had conducted a survey of milk and milk products during festivals in 542 districts in which a total of 2,801 samples were taken. It included both organized and unorganized sector. And in the year 2022, after lumpy skin disease, FSSAI had conducted milk survey in total 12 states.
