Microplastic particles have been found in all brands of salt and sugar sold in the Indian market, whether they are big brands or small brands, packaged or sold in the open. This claim has been made in a study released on Tuesday. The study titled 'Microplastics in Salt and Sugar' was conducted by environmental research organization 'Toxics Link'. To reach this conclusion, the institute studied 10 types of salt, including white salt, organic rock salt, sea salt and raw salt. Five types of sugar purchased online and from local markets were also examined. The study revealed the presence of microplastics in all salt and sugar samples, which were found in various forms including fibers, pellets, films and pieces. The size of these microplastics ranges from 0.1 millimeters (mm) to five mm. That's all.

What does the study say?

According to the research, iodised salt had the highest concentration of microplastics in the form of multicoloured thin fibres and films. In this regard, Ravi Agarwal, Founder-Director of Toxics Link, said, 'The aim of our study was to contribute to the database on microplastics so that the global plastic agreement can address this issue in a concrete and focused manner.' Associate Director of Toxics Link said, “Our study is on all salt. And the significant amount of microplastics in sugar samples is worrying.” Urgent and extensive research is needed on the long-term effects of microplastics on human health. According to the research, the amount of microplastics in salt samples ranged from 6.71 to 89.15 pieces per kg. At the same time, the amount of microplastics was the highest in iodised salt (89.15 pieces per kg), while organic rock salt had the lowest (6.70 pieces per kg).

• According to the study, the amount of microplastics in the sugar samples ranged from 11.85 to 68.25 pieces per kilogram, with the highest amount found in non-organic sugar.

• These tiny plastic particles can enter the human body through food, water and air.

• Recent research has found microplastics in the lungs, heart, and even in breast milk and unborn babies.

• According to earlier research, every Indian consumes an average of 10.98 grams of salt and about 10 teaspoons of sugar every day, which is much more than the limit recommended by the World Health Organisation.
