Chennai Consumer Forum Imposed 1 Lakh Rupees Penalty On ITC Due To This Reason

Consumer Forum asked ITC to Pay Compensation: One biscuit of India’s giant company ITC Limited is lying for one lakh rupees. Many times such cases come to the fore in the consumer forum which leave people perplexed. One such case is of Chennai where the forum has imposed a heavy fine on ITC Limited. According to the report published in the Times of India, ITC found it very difficult to keep one biscuit less in the packet of biscuits. For this reason, the court has ordered the company to pay a fine of one lakh rupees.

What is the whole matter?

In fact, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a person named MMDA Mathur KP Dilibabu bought a packet of ‘Sun Feast Merry Light’ biscuits from a shop in Manali to feed stray dogs on the street. There are total 16 biscuits in this package, but this person got one biscuit less. Its person inquired with the company on this matter where he did not get any correct answer. After this he lodged his complaint in the consumer forum.

The company is doing fraud of Rs 29 lakh everyday – customer

Keeping his argument in the Consumer Forum on this matter, Dilibabu said that the ITC company puts 75 paise less biscuits in its packet every day. And every day 50 lakh biscuit packets are produced by the company. In such a situation, every day the company is doing fraud of goods worth Rs 29 lakh. While giving clarification on this matter, the company said that it gives its goods on the basis of weight. The company had written the weight of the biscuit as 76 grams in its packet, but on checking it, only 74 grams of biscuits were found in the packet containing 15 biscuits.

Forum fined one lakh rupees

In the hearing on this matter, ITC’s counsel argued in the court that according to the Legal Metrology Rules of the year 2011, the margin of error in packaged goods has been allowed at a maximum of 4.5 grams per packet. But the court did not agree with this argument. The forum said that this rule is only for things of volatile nature and biscuits do not fall in this category. In such a situation, biscuits are always sold according to weight. Along with this, the company has made a mistake in terms of both weight and biscuits. For this reason, along with imposing a fine of Rs one lakh on the company, the Forum has also stopped the sale of this batch of biscuits.
