Central Govt to tackle e commerce deceptive practices in first 100 days after election

E-commerce companies in the country may have to face strictures after the Lok Sabha elections. The Central Government has also included the e-commerce sector in the 100-day work plan for the new term, in which the main emphasis will be on the activities adopted by e-commerce companies to mislead customers.

first 100 days plan

According to an ET report, the central government is preparing to launch an app to protect customers from the deceptive activities of e-commerce companies. This app can be launched in the next 2 months, because the government has included it in the action plan of the first 100 days of the new term. It is being told that this app will curb those deceptive techniques of e-commerce companies, which are also known as dark patterns.

This is how things get messed up

Many times you might have seen that when you are buying an item from an e-commerce platform, you would be told that now only one or two or a few selected units are in stock and after the stock gets exhausted, the offer will not be available. Many times e-commerce companies offer extra discounts on some products on subscription option, which is like a trap in a way. You are asked for payment details and later you are not able to cancel the subscription even if you want to.

Dark patterns of e-commerce

Such activities done by e-commerce companies are called deceptive techniques or dark patterns. There is no benefit to the customers in this, but by showing them less stock, a sense of urgency is created and they are indirectly forced to purchase immediately. In such subscriptions, sales are made by luring extra discounts. The government is preparing to curb these activities.

only this much work has to be done

To avoid these, the user will have to download only one app in his mobile. That app will identify the dark patterns of e-commerce companies i.e. activities defrauding customers and will alert the user about the same. After that the user will also be able to lodge a complaint on the consumer forum against the concerned action of the e-commerce company.
