The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has advised patients and healthcare professionals to stop using Digene Gel, an alert issued due to safety concerns.
Caution regarding use of Digene gel
DCGI has issued an alert regarding the popular antacid syrup Digene Gel made in Goa facility. Under this, instructions have been issued for the recall of Digene Gel to healthcare professionals, customers, patients, wholesale distributors and regulatory authorities. Significantly, the production of antacid syrup Digene Gel is done by the pharma company Abbott India.

DGCA has issued a public notice issue related to this on its website and according to this the disputed product (Digene Gel) may be unsafe and its use may have adverse effects. The Drugs Controller General of India has suggested doctors and healthcare professionals to be cautious while prescribing to their patients and sensitize patients to avoid the use of Digene Gel, in case of any adverse effect or drug reaction If so, immediately pay attention to it and inform. DGCA has said in a letter that if any suspicious case related to this product comes, then healthcare professionals should report it immediately.

What Abbott India has to say
Abbott India spokesperson has said that it is important to note that the company has voluntarily recalled the ant acid medicine manufactured at the Goa plant. Only a few customers complained that there was a difference in the taste and aroma of the syrup. There has not been any complaint related to the health of any patient. He also said that other forms of Digene such as Digene tablets and stick packs have not been affected and Digene gel manufactured at other plants of the company has also not been affected. These will be available in sufficient quantity to meet the current demand. The company’s second production plant is at Baddi.
